"I have memories.
More than 60 years ago when I was a member of the Woman's Land Army I used to drive from Chertsey (where I was billeted) to Merrow and pick up 3 Italian prisoners and drive them to Ottershaw Park where we had a depot.

They always worked cheerfully, were very polite and always singing Santa Lucia and Come back to Sorrento also Lily Marlene the song they picked up from the British captors in Tobruk who had picked it up from the Germans. What a strange thing to happen to a song.

When the Germans captured Yugoslavia they decided to broadcast to the civilians and the first record they found was Lily Marlene which they broadcast sung by Lallii Anderson. She was imprisoned soon after. I don't know what happened to her.

There is so much about the war you never forget. It seems like another life. Now I am 90 I often look back, funny how those memories are so fresh."
